Task 3 - PowerPoint
Task 3 - Powerpoint Presentation
This task I have chosen to speak about Powerpoint. I chose this topic because it's what I used at school and throughout my first placement late last year and what I see myself using in my career as a teacher. I have learnt this week that powerpoint has so many more applications other than just text and pictures. I particularly like features such as animations, transitions between slides, and gallery walks. I can see how these could capture students' attention making it a more interesting learning experience.

Here you can see Word being used to take notes about the topic for SAMR model. This is explained more towards the end.

Above you can see the front page when you open Powerpoint. Here you can pick a template that suits the task you’ve been assigned.

Above you can see I have selected a layout. What I found really handy on the right hand side of the page when you insert a picture it gives you design ideas. You can go through a pick the best that suits what the student is looking for.
Powerpoint also has a really neat application. Where you just type what you're looking for e.g. ‘Meat’ and on the right hand side pictures of meat automatically come up, this will save time not having to go to the internet. The picture on left shows other food groups this same application was done with.

In this picture you can see on the top right hand corner you can select media or sounds. From there you can record or insert a video relating to the topic. You can set this up so once you've finished speaking the PowerPoint will automatically go to the next slide.

Here you can select a zoom summary. This allows you to create a zoom slide while you’re presenting. So it will zoom in on the slide you want and then when you’re done it will take you back to the original slide.
PowerPoint is very safe for students to use. All the pictures are free to use so they will not have to worry about copyright laws. The main safety ethical practices students must exercise is making sure they reference their work correctly ensuring they give credit to the correct sources. Furthermore, a safety precaution should be followed if students use the camera on the computer.
SAMR Model
Substitution - Students are to research different types of food groups and use Word to type information on each food group.
Augmentation - Students are to create a Powerpoint presentation. Creating 1 slide per food group.
Modification - Students are then to add on to that powerpoint explaining the purpose of each food group for the human body and the effects food has on our bodies.
Redefinition - Students collaboratively in groups create a video slideshow with powerpoint using a voice record application to explain their findings for the assessment above. This can be shared with fellow students to review and give constructive feedback if necessary.

Hi Paddy,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your blog post about presentations. I found it easy to follow and full of useful information. I enjoyed how you used the SAMR model to tie in the information. I'd love to see more detail into the SAMR model and what else you can do with powerpoint outside of it's basic features.
Well done!
Hannah
Hey Paddy, great blog post! I really understood your explanation of PowerPoint and have a mutual love for it's user friendliness and handy features such as the design ideas and image library where copyright doesn't have to be an issue. PowerPoint has come a long way and it has proven to be such an excellent program after all these years.
